Dear Diary,

Today, my life changed forever with the light tap on the door to my room.  When I saw the look on my sister’s face, fear welled up from deep inside me.  She was pale as the linens on my bed.  She held a letter in her hand.

“I’m sorry,” Abigail said.  “It was addressed to me, and I opened it.  Sissy, you’d better sit down.”

I moved to the only chair in my room before my wobbly legs gave out from under me.  In a shaky voice, hoping to lighten the moment, I said, “We really should bring another chair upstairs so you may sit as well.”

Neither of us laughed.  I sat and arranged the skirt of dark blue wool dress around my feet to help keep them warm.  When I took the letter, I marveled at how my hand shook.

First, I looked to see that the letter was signed by my dear friend Becky in Philadelphia.  Seeing her familiar signature, I could feel a slight smile dance over my lips as my eyes moved to the beginning of the letter and read::

         Dear Abigail,
I have news that affects the package in your care.  The matched set of which you          hold one piece is now separated for the one left here has disappeared in the dark
        of night.

I was confused and asked Abigail if she understood what Becky was saying.  Her words made me want to sink to my knees.  She said that Nathaniel has left Philadelphia, that he had run away in the middle of the night.

Priscilla is a key character in the new dual timeline novel:
